Traffic Signal Improvements at McDonough and Candler Ready for Completion

The impact

New equipment required for the completion of upgraded College Avenue traffic signals at McDonough and Candler Streets will be installed beginning this week. The technology involved is innovative and will greatly improve safety and convenience for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. Weather permitting, the work is expected to take 2-3 weeks.

The details

Late last fall, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) gave the City permission to install additional protected left turn signals to several legs of the intersections at McDonough and Candler. Because there are so many elements at each crossing — regular traffic signals, pedestrian signals, the new left turns, the railroad pre-emption — special equipment is required, including new advanced traffic controllers (the cabinets that house the technology that runs the system) as well as additional signal heads. GDOT has provided the new equipment at no cost to the City and has contributed significant resources to this project as well as other pedestrian safety improvements in the City of Decatur.

How to manage

Vehicular access in the area will remain open during construction but traffic flow will be moderately affected. Please expect delays and plan accordingly.
