Reimagine West Howard Avenue Starts This Week

The impact

Weather permitting, work on the City’s Reimagine West Howard project is anticipated to begin Thursday, July 5, 2018 and last approximately two weeks. Wildcat Sealing & Striping has been contracted to make the modifications, which extend from the City limits near Paden Circle to Commerce Drive.

The details

Reimagine West Howard is a community-initiated effort to improve safety, access, and comfort for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists along the West Howard Avenue corridor.

Relying primarily on signage, pavement markings, and small-scale, semi-permanent landscape materials rather than an extensive overhaul of infrastructure, the project allows for concept testing with minimal investment. Should it work successfully, it can become more permanent in the years ahead when/if funds become available. If there are issues with how it performs, it can be easily modified.

Once completed, the project will expand connectivity for the Safe Routes to School program and help address neighborhood concerns regarding pedestrian crosswalks, vehicle visibility, and speeding.

The project includes:

  • Reducing this section of West Howard from four vehicle travel lanes to two with dedicated turn lanes at key intersections.
  • Additional cycling opportunities, allowing the PATH Stone Mountain Trail to better serve pedestrians, recreational users, and the disabled.
  • New midblock pedestrian crossings at Drexel Avenue, Adair Street, and Greenwood Circle.
  • An adjusted pedestrian crosswalk at Atlanta Avenue.

Final engineering plans for Reimagine West Howard can be reviewed here.

How to manage

Vehicular access in the area will remain open during construction but traffic flow will be moderately affected. Please expect delays and plan accordingly.
